How to play Escoba

A practical guide to the objective, legal flow, and decisions that matter in this playable version.

Objective

Escoba is a capture game where a played card combines with table cards to total fifteen. Clearing the whole table makes an escoba, and the final score rewards captures, sweeps, key cards, and suit majorities under the displayed rules.

How a turn works

Choose a hand card, then select a legal combination of table cards whose values plus the played card total fifteen. If no capture exists, leave the played card on the table. Captured cards leave together, and clearing every table card records a sweep. The last capturing player receives remaining table cards at round end.

Strategy that changes the outcome

Compare all combinations before capturing. Taking one attractive card may leave a simple fifteen for the opponent, while a different combination protects the Seven of Coins or creates a future sweep. Track which high-value scoring cards have already left and use non-capturing plays to make awkward table totals.

First decision: Capture combinations that total fifteen while tracking sevens, coins, and opportunities to clear the table.

A common mistake to avoid

A capture is based on the total including the card played from hand. Selecting table cards that total fifteen by themselves is not the required combination.

Three useful table habits

  • Search for multiple combinations before confirming a capture.
  • Protect the Seven of Coins and other scoring majorities.
  • After a sweep, avoid rebuilding an easy fifteen for the opponent.

A question players ask

What is an escoba?

An escoba is a capture that clears every card from the table. It normally earns an immediate sweep point, though the final capture of a deal may be treated differently by the selected rules.
