How to play Bridge

A practical guide to the objective, legal flow, and decisions that matter in this playable version.

Objective

Contract Bridge is a partnership trick-taking game. The auction establishes a contract naming a level and trump suit, or no-trump, and the declaring partnership must win at least that many tricks above six. Defenders try to set the contract.

How a turn works

Bid or pass during the auction using the strength and shape of the hand. After the opening lead, declarer plays both their own hand and the exposed dummy. Players must follow the led suit when able; otherwise they may discard or trump. The highest trump wins, or the highest card of the led suit when no trump is played.

Strategy that changes the outcome

Translate the auction into a plan before touching dummy. Count certain winners, likely losers, missing high cards, and entries between the two partnership hands. Declarer may draw trump, establish a long suit, or ruff losers; defenders use leads, signals, and the auction to locate honours and preserve communication.

First decision: Use the auction to describe shape and strength, then plan the whole contract before playing from dummy.

A common mistake to avoid

Winning a trick as soon as possible can destroy an entry needed later. Bridge rewards planning the order of tricks, not merely taking the current trick with the highest available card.

Three useful table habits

  • Review the full auction before planning the opening play.
  • Count trump and proven voids as each trick finishes.
  • Keep an entry to any long suit you intend to establish.

A question players ask

Why is one Bridge hand exposed as dummy?

After the opening lead, declarer’s partner places the dummy face up. Declarer chooses cards from both partnership hands, while dummy provides no independent decisions for that deal.
