How to play Euchre

A practical guide to the objective, legal flow, and decisions that matter in this playable version.

Objective

Euchre is a five-trick partnership game using a short deck. The partnership that names trump must win at least three tricks; winning all five earns a march, while a lone player can earn a larger reward.

How a turn works

The trump-making rounds let players order up the turned suit or name another suit. The Jack of trump is the right bower and highest card; the Jack of the same colour is the left bower and also belongs to trump. Follow suit when able, and award each trick to the highest trump or highest card of the led suit.

Strategy that changes the outcome

Recount suit membership after trump is chosen because the left bower changes suits. Makers should lead trump when drawing defenders’ trump helps establish side Aces, but should preserve a bower when it protects a fragile later trick. Defenders coordinate through leads and avoid spending two winners on the same trick.

First decision: Re-evaluate both Jacks after trump is chosen: the right and left bowers are the two highest cards of the trump suit.

A common mistake to avoid

The left bower belongs to trump, not its printed suit. If Diamonds are trump, the Jack of Hearts counts as a Diamond when following suit; it may be played on a Heart lead only when you have no other Hearts.

Three useful table habits

  • Count the right and left bowers before evaluating the hand.
  • Lead through the maker when a guarded side Ace can survive.
  • Going alone needs reliable tricks, not merely one powerful bower.

A question players ask

What is the left bower in Euchre?

It is the Jack of the suit the same colour as trump. It becomes the second-highest trump card, immediately below the right bower, and no longer counts as its printed suit.
