How to play Crazy Eights
A practical guide to the objective, legal flow, and decisions that matter in this playable version.
Objective
Crazy Eights is a four-player shedding game played to 100 points. Empty your hand to score the cards left in all opponents’ hands: Eights count 50, Tens and face cards 10, Aces 1, and other ranks their face value.
How a turn works
Match the discard by suit or rank, or use an Eight and call the next suit. You may play a legal group of equal-rank cards together. If blocked, draw one card at a time, stopping as soon as you can play; after three unsuccessful draws, pass. Another hand begins unless the winner has reached 100 points.
Strategy that changes the outcome
Choose a wild suit that matches the greatest depth in the remaining hand, not merely the next card. Preserve an Eight as insurance when the hand has awkward suit distribution, and notice which suits cause the opponent to draw. Near the finish, plan the final two cards so the penultimate play creates a legal exit.
First decision: Change suit toward the strength of your remaining hand and avoid being left with an awkward final card.
A common mistake to avoid
After an Eight, the printed suit of that Eight is irrelevant. The called suit controls the next normal play until another rank match or wild card changes the state.
Three useful table habits
- Count the suits in your hand before calling with an Eight.
- Save a wild card when it protects an otherwise stranded final card.
- Watch which suit repeatedly forces the opponent to draw.
A question players ask
Can an Eight be the final card in Crazy Eights?
Yes. An Eight may be your final card in this version. Choose a suit to confirm the play; emptying your hand ends the round and awards the remaining opponents’ card values.
