How to play Mahjong Solitaire
A practical guide to the objective, legal flow, and decisions that matter in this playable version.
Objective
Mahjong Solitaire clears a layered tile layout by removing matching free pairs. A tile is free when no tile covers it and at least one horizontal side is open. The deal is won when every pair has been removed.
How a turn works
Select one free tile, then choose a matching free partner. Ordinary tiles must match exactly; Flower and Season groups may match within their respective groups under the table rules. Removed pairs expose tiles beneath and may open the blocked side of neighbouring tiles.
Strategy that changes the outcome
Prefer pairs that free two different areas or uncover a tall stack. When three matching free tiles exist, compare which choice preserves a partner for the copy most likely to become trapped. Do not clear easy edge pairs automatically if they are the only partners for tiles buried in the centre.
First decision: Remove matching free tiles without trapping a unique partner beneath long rows or tall stacks.
A common mistake to avoid
A visible tile is not necessarily free. A tile with another tile resting above it, or with neighbours tight against both horizontal sides, cannot be selected.
Three useful table habits
- Look for pairs that open both a top layer and a side lane.
- When three matches are free, protect the partner needed by a buried copy.
- Use reshuffle or hint only after scanning the whole layered board.

Can every Mahjong Solitaire layout be solved?
This version deals a solvable arrangement, but a poor removal order can still block the remaining matches. Restarting the same layout lets you test a different pairing sequence without changing the puzzle.
