How to play Crescent

A practical guide to the objective, legal flow, and decisions that matter in this playable version.

Objective

Crescent Solitaire surrounds eight foundations with a crescent of tableau piles. Four foundations build upward by suit and four build downward, with Ace and King wrapping where the rules permit. Move every crescent card onto a foundation.

How a turn works

Move the exposed top card of a crescent pile to a foundation or onto another crescent card of the same suit and adjacent rank. Foundations grow in their indicated direction. When no useful move remains, use a permitted reshuffle to rotate cards within the crescent piles.

Strategy that changes the outcome

A card can serve an ascending or descending plan, so compare both foundation sides before committing it. Avoid advancing one foundation so far that it consumes the only connector needed elsewhere. Before reshuffling, look for same-suit transfers that expose a buried card and preserve the remaining reshuffles.

First decision: Plan both ascending and descending foundation moves before reshuffling the crescent, because a card may be useful in either direction.

A common mistake to avoid

Alternating-colour tableau habits do not apply. Crescent transfers and foundations are suit-specific, and each foundation’s direction must be respected.

Three useful table habits

  • Check both foundation directions for every exposed card.
  • Keep ascending and descending ranks close enough to share access.
  • Use reshuffles only after all same-suit transfers are exhausted.

A question players ask

What does reshuffling do in Crescent Solitaire?

It rotates the unfounded cards within each crescent pile, exposing a different card without undoing foundation progress. Because reshuffles are limited, each one should follow a complete scan for available moves.
